Taryn Spink is a Hurdy Gurdy and French Horn player in the Los Angeles area and a professional music teacher with over 11 years of experience from elementary through high school. She holds a B.M. in Music Performance, B.A. in English, and an M.A. in education from Azusa Pacific University.
Taryn’s Hurdy Gurdy Journey began as a curiosity, then a dream, but it quickly blossomed into a full fledged passion for all things Hurdy Gurdy. Her journey has taken her all over Europe multiple times and captivated her into several different instruments, playing styles, and musical adventures: from Balfolk to Galician to Balkan; medieval to modern; French baroque to rock; and from the dance festival stage to the recording studio. Taryn has studied privately with Alexis Vacher, Richard Taylor, and Steve Tyler, as well as in workshop settings with notable Hurdy Gurdy players such as Patrick Bouffard, Matthias Loibner, Gregory Jolivet, Tobie Miller, German Diaz, and Scott Marshall. Taryn is conducting ethnomusicological studies in the field of traditional music with RT Taylor which will result in an upcoming tunebook! She loves the Hurdy Gurdy and is inspired to share it with others.

Scott Gayman (Southern California): Scott began study in 2005 at the Over the Water Hurdy Gurdy Festival and continued study with his good friend and teacher Richard Taylor. Throughout the next 18 years, Richard Taylor tirelessly tutored Scott, teaching him a great deal about the hurdy gurdy and introducing him to great people and incredible players throughout the world. In the past 18 years, Scott has had the pleasure of studying with Patrick Bouffard, Jean Michel Peru, Tobie Miller, Anne-Lise Foy, Laurent Bitaud, Maxou Heitzin, and Mathias Loidner. He is primarily a French Trad player but teaches music from around the world.
Scott has also spent considerable time studying hurdy gurdy construction and maintenance. With help from Curtis Berak, and the ability to study Curtis’ extensive collection as well as develop a considerable collection of his own, Scott began picking out minor, yet important, details of hurdy gurdy construction. Scott uses his knowledge to help the students of the Indiana Hurdy Gurdy Workshop to maintain and improve their instruments. Scott provides training and assistance for students to help learn how to repair, maintain, and set up their instruments at the workshop as well. You will not find this training anywhere else in the US.
(Arrive early on Wednesday and Scott and Taryn will help you adjust your instrument for your future classes)
